MAPPING MURDER: Virtual Crime And The Future

We look at the present and to the future where everyone does leave a trace, the mobile phone network, CCTV, bank cash points, etc.

Professor Canter helps Northamptonshire Police track a malicious criminal who used the telephone to threaten women.

Geographical profiling shows by the cluster of calls where the criminal’s activity was centred. Geographical profiling and recent technology also helped trace the Mardi Gras bomber in London via the cash points he used.

Looking to the future, Professor Canter shows how advancing technology and geographical profiling can pin down where criminals are operating from. He visits the US and sees how the Japanese computer system, HITS is helping police trace criminals.

He stresses that tracking down hidden criminals via the new technology is particularly useful after September 11th.
